This was my second time participating in the Tucson Aerobatic Shootout. We once again arrived at TRCC for a few days of practice and adjustments. This year we revealed the V2 Extreme Flight 104" Extra 300. I actually made the maiden flight and initial test flights of this airplane at the Tucson Radio Control Club during practice. I had hoped to fly it in the competition, but decided to use the Slick instead which I was more comfortable with at the time. Plus, the routine that I planned on flying fit the Slick better. With more practice on the Slick and more dialing to be done on the V2 Extra, I went into the contest with the Slick. The Extra did however make a great display under the tent during the Shootout! 5 total freestyle rounds were flown (1 Friday, 2 Saturday, and 2 Sunday). I remember the first round being decently windy and it presented some challenges with positioning. Also, I flew round 1 without any previous flights on site as we usually do for the TAS freestyle. Although I didn't quite have the flight I had hoped for, I adjusted fairly well despite not being used to the field and fighting the wind. I ended up finishing that round in 2nd place with a 989. Going into Saturday, I knew I had to make up some ground and also knew I could fly my routine a lot better. Round 2 did in fact turn out better and I ended up picking up a thousand which put me in 1st place overall after Round 2. However, my scores in round 3 quickly moved me back down to 2nd overall after receiving a 940 for that flight. In order to pull off the win, it now looked like that I would have to win both rounds on Sunday more than likely. Once the final results were announced after the contest on Sunday, I found out I received an even lower score for round 4 with a 938, but I did indeed pick up a second round win in the final round. Looking back on the contest as a whole, even though rounds 3 and 4 scored significantly lower than I had hoped, I din't mind those scores as much because they ended up being thrown. What I did look back on the most was the first round where I received a 989 and knew I had a lot of room for improvement. So overall with rounds 1,2,and 5 being kept I received a 2,989 which was only 11 points away from the 3,000 first place score. Final results: 1. Spencer Nordquist 3,000.0 2. Jase Dussia 2,989.5 3. Bryant Mack 2,949.3 4. Kal Reifsnyder 2,889.8 5. Yuhei Suzuki 2,800.9 6. Aaron Garle 2,768.7 7. Sacha Cecconi 2,757.0 8. Dean Lampron 2,742.0 9. Santiago Perez 2,715.0 10. Brian Strachan 2,700.3 11. Matt Stringer 2,690.1 12. Kim Quenette 2,666.4 13. Miguel Alcala 2,236.8 Thanks to The Lord for this opportunity to compete at TAS, thanks to my parents for their help and support, thanks to all my sponsors, and thanks to all the TAS staff!
